The Blank Canvas Problem

"Your life is possibility". "Everyone has unlimited potential". "You can do what you set yourself to do".

I enjoy reading uplifting quotes. Motivational stuff. A lot of people do. At the end, what's wrong with a daily dose of optimism?

There's nothing wrong with it. In fact, I believe it's preferable over being inundated with pessimism and about how bad the world appears to be. The "problem", with this wave of optimism is that it's inherently empty. I call it "the blank canvas problem".

Yes. Everyone has potential. Each and everyone of us has an enormous potential to do many things. BUT.

Our life is not an empty canvas. Our life is the result of everything we've done. Every word we've said. Every decision we've made. Yes, we all have a lot of potential, but our experience to this point gives that potential a shape and a direction: There's no way, for example, that I can become an NFL player next year. I have no idea what type of work that would entail and I know that, even if I trained incessantly for the next 12 months, I won't be able to be a professional athlete in the NFL or otherwise in that short period of time (or probably ever).

Where you are today will influence where you'll be in the next 5, 10 or 15 years.

A similar thing happens with your financial reality. Where you are today will influence where you'll be in the next 5, 10 or 15 years. I'm not saying that it will determine it. I said: Influence. Do you like where you are? Do you like your income, the way you spend, the amounts you're saving and, in general, how your financial picture currently looks? If you do, great! It may be wise for you to take a look at your current situation and make sure that everything is as best as it can be (I can help you do this review).  If you don't like where you are, what is under your control to change it? (Hint: It's probably more than you think)

Do you like your financial path? Have you built a financial plan or, in the words of the wonderful Dr. Dar, do you have a prosperity plan? If so, how does it look like?
